This course is for anyone who works at a facility that provides patient care or provides referrals for patient care. All health care staff need to be aware of how facilities work to create an environment that is safe and comfortable for patients of all ages and cultural backgrounds.

Objectives
The purpose of this course is to increase your awareness of the diversity among the patients and to emphasis your responsibility to provide the best possible care in a safe environment.

  • Upon completing this course, you will be able to perform the following tasks:
  • Discuss what age- and cultural-specific care are and why they are important.
  • State the age division categories used for population-specific care.
  • Apply the four major skills needed to provide population-specific care.
  • Define culture and diversity; describe the importance when providing health services.
  • Explain how culture affects communications between caregivers and patient/residents.
  • Discuss employee responsibilities in regard to population-specific care.
  • Discuss who to notify when a non-English speaking patient/resident presents to your facility.
