Nursing, A.A.S.

The Nursing program received initial accreditation in 1971 from the National League for Nursing (NLN). Since that time, the program has received accreditation from The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing Inc. (ACEN). The program is registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and provides Binghamton and surrounding communities with the majority of graduates for its nursing workforce.

The nursing program is designed for students planning on entering the workforce immediately. It awards an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree and prepares students to transfer if they wish to pursue a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.

The nursing department admits a new class of freshmen students into the full-time day program once a year in September. Students are admitted into the evening weekend program only on even-numbered years, starting with January 2014.

The curriculum allows students to successfully complete 71 credits in a minimum of 2 years to a required maximum of 4 years. Students enrolled in the evening/weekend option can complete the program in a minimum of 3 years to a maximum of 4 years. Students may also elect to attend part-time in the day program. Part-time students take only one second-year course per semester.

LPN’s seeking advanced placement

There is an advanced placement option for Licensed Practical Nurses who qualify and then successfully complete the ADN 298 Nursing Seminar challenge course. This course is one credit and includes both classroom and skills evaluations. Upon successful completion of this course, LPN’s will bypass the A D N 105 course, enter A D N 106 and prerequisite course requirements will be waived.

LPN’s applying for advanced placement must submit transcripts from their LPN school and a copy of their LPN license with their application to SUNY BCC. Once application is received and it is determined that applicant meets requirements, applicant will then be contacted by a College Advisor. LPNs will then be required to schedule an appointment with the Nursing Department Chairperson after they have met with an Advisor. A D N 298 Seminar course is also required for students returning after being away from the program for a year and students transferring to SUNY Broome from other A D N nursing programs

Transfer Options

The SUNY Broome Nursing Department has articulation agreements with a variety of Bachelor of Science Nursing Schools which makes transfer to these programs a smooth transition. LPN’s may apply for a transfer credit per policy.
