The New York State AHEC System is a health care workforce development initiative with effective strategies to cultivate a workforce that more closely matches the diversity of the state\u2019s population and assure that each community has enough practitioners in the right categories (especially primary care).<\/p>\n
Our mission is to enhance access to quality healthcare and improve healthcare outcomes by addressing the health workforce needs of medically disadvantaged communities and populations through partnerships between the institutions that train health professionals and the communities that need them most.<\/p>\n
Our nine community-based AHECs are recognized leaders in developing a diverse, skilled and committed workforce across all sectors and disciplines of healthcare. We devote special attention to underserved urban and rural locales, ensuring that each community gets the help it needs.<\/p>\n

\nFrom middle and high school students to adults seeking new skills, AHEC program participants learn the real-life roles and rewards of health care occupations. Early exposure sparks interest and sets adolescents on the right academic path. Retraining directs displaced or downsized workers into jobs with a future.<\/p>\n
\nAHEC helps students obtain clinical training with minority and disadvantaged populations, and in rural locales and urban neighborhoods. Underserved communities gain the qualified professionals they need since workers often return to practice in sites where they have trained.<\/p>\n
\nAHEC works through community partnerships. We make sure we’re addressing each area’s specific needs and priorities by collaborating with schools, economic development agencies and health care institutions and practitioners.<\/p>\n
